They keep Europe running: truck drivers. They transport goods of all kinds across Europe. Without them, the economy would collapse and living standards would plummet. And yet this professional group is often overlooked or confronted with prejudices and stereotypes, as truckers often seem to obstruct drivers on highways with their huge trucks.
For the MOVERS exhibition, Simone Demandt photographed truck drivers in highway parking lots between 2017 and 2021. The photographs were taken in a specially set up open-air studio. The artist and the drivers communicated in seven Eastern European languages with the help of a booklet and three interpreters present. These encounters resulted in a series of analog black and white portraits.
Simone Demandt studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart and at the University of Stuttgart. She works with photography in an artistic context and reflects on the narrative structures of the medium, its technologies and its experimental extensions in her photographic works. She has taught at universities and academies. Her photographic works are shown in Germany and abroad and are accompanied by publications. They are represented in numerous public collections.
An exhibition accompanying"On the road again! The world of our truckers" (until 4.1.2026).
