The teaching of the Chinese zodiac signs(Jûnishi) has been handed down in Asia since ancient times. Sixty years of life are divided into twelve epochs, each comprising five years. The animal names assigned to these epochs originally served as a mnemonic device and are symbolic in nature. The doctrine links life phases with the growth processes of nature, which are represented by Japanese characters, and is intended to reflect the challenges of life and the ideal state of man in this epoch. With today's increased life expectancy, the 60th birthday remains a milestone that heralds a new chapter in which accumulated experience is put to good use.
Based on the concept of Jûnishi , the German-based pianist and composer Ono Takako has created the work 12 Zodiac, which will be premiered at the Japanese Cultural Institute for the New Year's Concert 2025.
