Program:
Works by Vincenzo Manfredini, Niccolò Piccinni and Domenico Cimarosa
Tsarina Catherine II formally became sovereign of the dominion of Jever in 1793, after the Anhalt princes, from whose line she descended, had already ruled there for over 100 years. In faraway Russia, where she had taken over the regency from her mentally challenged husband Peter III in 1762, she promoted the arts in St. Petersburg to the best of her ability in order to turn the still new residence into a cultural center of European standing. Catherine the Great, a highly educated woman, was in close contact with intellectual greats of her time such as Voltaire and Montesquieu. To promote music, she brought important Italian composers to her court, such as Niccolò Piccini, Vincenzo Manfredini and Domenico Cimarosa. When Alfredo Bernardini, Alessandro Quarta and other lecturers work with the atelier participants on a selection of arias and duets written by these composers, you will gain an insight into the Baroque music that was created explicitly for Catherine and her court.
