After a failed relationship, Elizabeth (Norah Jones) seeks solace with a blueberry muffin in a café and befriends Jeremy (Jude Law), the owner. Elizabeth and Jeremy spend a few nights chatting and eating cake. But then Elizabeth suddenly stops coming. She has set off on a trip across the USA to forget. Her trip first takes her to Memphis. There she works in a diner during the day and in a bar at night. Alcoholic cop Arnie (David Strathairn) is one of her regular customers. She witnesses how his love for his unfaithful wife Sue Lynne (Rachel Weisz) slowly destroys him. The next destination is in the West. In Nevada, she meets the gambler Leslie (Natalie Portman). She too has a sad secret. Throughout her journey, Elizabeth keeps in touch with Jeremy, to whom she regularly sends postcards with her feelings and thoughts...
