My face isn’t facing and my mind isn’t minding // Stina Hellmann

The realities that were still valid just a few years ago are disappearing or fading. Algorithms created by humans and increasingly by artificial intelligence are supposed to make life easier, but on the other hand prevent people from breaking out of their own filter bubble.
In these times, there is a need for questions that occupy Stina Hellmann. The question of beauty, for example, which has always been a questionable state of human perception. What constitutes beauty? Where do our senses get ahead of us and where are the programs, apps and tools that have been designed to optimize our appearance on the web? Why do glitches¹ arise that only reveal to us at third or fourth glance that every virtual-visual reality is ultimately only composed of pixels? Hellmann looks for the errors and potentials in the programs and images and makes them more apparent to us.

Time and again, real time sequences or documentations appear in her works. They are often the starting points for her questions, which are always about working through reality in digital processes, creating new perspectives and establishing the humanity in these elements.

Imagine if many recordings of the same piece of music by different artists were layered on top of each other, the result would probably be white noise at some point. What about pictures and films? The recognizability becomes distorted to the point of being unrecognizable.
Only in the empty spaces that need to be discovered can we see our attitude to society itself questioned.

Hellmann lets us search, but without claiming that we must also find. However, if we see ourselves as part of an image process in her works, then these mostly digital works take on a depth of meaning that goes beyond habits and conventions.
