When Louise comes to in the morning, she finds herself in a bunker: bunks, table, chair and lots of canned food. The bunker belongs to Mark. He rescued her and carried her into the bunker, he says. Rescued? From what? Louise can't remember anything. Mark describes an explosion with nuclear explosives that caused deaths and injuries. But he carried her through the danger zone and took her to his bunker, which he had set up a few years ago. At the time, everyone made fun of him. He describes his heroic rescue in detail.

They would certainly have to spend several days, if not weeks, in this shelter until the air was clean again from the nuclear contamination. He has made provisions with his canned food. Mark expects Louise to show her gratitude by being physically close and accommodating. The fact that she won't give in to this makes him increasingly angry and he begins to impose his will in perfidious ways. Mark resorts to all means to make Louise compliant and does not shy away from sexualized violence.

What really happened outside? What kind of person is Mark, who is underestimated by everyone? Is this insecure man a noble knight or a psychopath? What does this threatening, claustrophobic situation do to Louise, who is usually so easy-going? She suspects that she must somehow play the power game in order not to go under.

"After the End" by Dennis Kelly takes the audience off the rails and is as exciting as a thriller. Once gained, insights are immediately called into question again. The play, which premiered in London in 2005 and was first performed in Germany at the Deutsches Theater Berlin in 2007, looks deep into the psyche of the two protagonists, who find themselves in an inscrutable game of love, power and violence from which no one can emerge as the winner.
