In our networked world, it seems paradoxical: it has never been so easy to get in touch with other people - and yet more and more people are feeling lonely. Loneliness is increasingly becoming one of the most pressing social challenges. The World Health Organization (WHO) now classifies loneliness as a serious risk factor for health. People of all ages are affected, but especially older people, people living alone and, increasingly, young adults. The coronavirus pandemic has significantly accelerated this development.
Countries such as the UK and Japan have already set up ministries or commissioners to combat loneliness. In Germany, community projects, visiting services and the promotion of meeting spaces are being discussed. The Politischer Salon takes up this topic and discusses it with Elvira Osmann (committed pensioner from Erfurt), Anna Reinhardt (pastor of the Catholic Student Community / KSG Erfurt) and Janosch Schobin (author of the book "Zeiten der Einsamkeit. Explorations of a universal feeling") on the causes and manifestations of loneliness and promising strategies to combat this painful feeling.
