The brutal attack on Israel by the terrorist Hamas on October 7, 2023 and the abduction of over 200 people to the Gaza Strip marked the beginning of a new war in the Middle East, which continues to escalate on a daily basis. There is no end in sight, quite the opposite: the Israeli government under Benjamin Netanyahu is aiming to occupy the entire Gaza Strip, and perhaps parts of the West Bank too. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is becoming increasingly desperate. The international community is therefore calling for an end to the violence and the resumption of peace negotiations. However, in view of the ongoing military operations and geopolitical tensions, a solution to the conflict remains more than uncertain.
The Politischer Salon will discuss the situation in the Middle East with Sophie Hoffmann (Junior Professor of International Politics and Conflict Research at the University of Erfurt with a focus on international relations in the Middle East region) and others. How do people in Israel and the Gaza Strip experience the situation? How do they view the spiral of violence and the logic of the military? Is there still reasonable hope for peace for Israel and Palestine?
In cooperation with the Katholisches Forum im Land Thüringen, the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Thüringen and MDR Thüringen
