With Princessletthewind, the Kunstverein für Mecklenburg und Vorpommern in Schwerin presents the first institutional solo exhibition of the American sculptor Nancy Lupo in Germany.
Nancy Lupo's artistic practice is deeply engaged with our material culture, focusing on the dynamics between people, everyday materials and spaces. Her works examine how collective fantasies, emotions, energies and ideologies are anchored in these (infra)structures and objects - whether through tradition, neglect or deliberate construction. In doing so, Lupo not only questions social and material conditions, but also offers a perspective that reflects on the interactions between affective, material and imaginary practices.
For Princessletthewind, an installation developed especially for the Kunstverein's spaces, Nancy Lupo ties in with her most recent series of works, which deals with forms of "cruel optimism" - a concept formulated by the American cultural theorist Lauren Berlant.
Nancy Lupo (*1983, USA) lives and works in Berlin. Lupo studied at the Cooper Union in New York and Yale University in New Haven and later took part in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Tbilisi Propaganda Residency and Casa Wabi. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at MORAN MORAN, Mexico, Kristina Kite Gallery, Los Angeles, the Visual Arts Center at the University of Texas, Austin, and the Swiss Institute, New York, among others. Her works have also been part of national and international group exhibitions, including at the Aspen Art Museum, Colorado, the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Hiroshima, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome, the Neuer Kunstverein Wien, Vienna, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles, the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, and the Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo. Nancy Lupo has also been Professor of Sculpture at the Kunsthochschule Mainz since 2024.
