An Afropolitan singer-songwriter sound journey that interweaves personal stories with modern jazz and African groove

Somi grew up between two cultures due to her childhood in the US state of Illinois and in the African country of Zambia and therefore stands for a truly transatlantic sound. International critics like to compare the singer with greats such as Miriam Makeba, Dianne Reeves and Nina Simone. And rightly so: the daughter of Rwandan-Ugandan parents has a similarly nuanced and colorful voice and combines jazz, soul and pop with traditional African music in her songs. She describes her multicultural fusion approach as "New African Jazz" and explains: "Some people only see me as an African act, not as a jazz act, while others see me as a jazz artist with African influences. But I don't focus on one genre." Her political commitment is also reflected in her lyrics when she addresses topics such as transnationalism, cultural differences, circumcision or genocide. In this way, Somi combines jazz, soul and the music of her roots with profound singer-songwriter material to create songs full of sensuality and spirituality that also convey a strong socio-political message.
