Big football festival: New England Patriots and the city of Düsseldorf open flag football field
Düsseldorf is increasingly becoming a football stronghold. Another highlight along the way: the grand opening of a flag football field sponsored by the New England Patriots in the Garath district. Together with the city of Düsseldorf, the six-time Super Bowl champion is inviting everyone to a big family festival with lots of football action, entertainment and street food on April 5.
Special highlight: For the first time in the history of the New England Patriots, active players will be on site at an off-season event in Germany to sign autographs, fulfill photo requests and celebrate this special day together with the fans. The two German players Sebastian Vollmer and Markus Kuhn as well as other former Patriots players will also be there. Also present: Pat Patriot mascot, the official NFL cheerleaders of the Patriots and other exciting guests.
The event will not only be a unique experience for all football fans and sports enthusiasts, but will also offer a sporting spectacle. The new field will be inaugurated with the NFL Flag U14 final tournament, in which the best school teams in Germany will compete against each other. Spectators can look forward to a high-class and exciting competition. The Patriots are also organizing an NFL Combine, where athletes of all ages can test their skills and win great prizes. No previous football knowledge or experience is required to take part.
Düsseldorf's Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller is delighted: "The New England Patriots are sending an important signal for the development of American football in Germany and in the sports city of Düsseldorf with their commitment to the flag football field in Garath and the football festival on April 5 to mark the opening of the facility. Our common goal is to become the leading flag football project in Germany. April 5 is an important milestone in this regard, and I cordially invite all Düsseldorf residents to attend."
Joe Dorant, Senior Director of International for the Patriots, adds: "Football connects people - and flag football makes this fascinating sport accessible to even more people. With the New England Patriots Flag Football Field, together with the city of Düsseldorf, we have created a place where girls and boys can try out this great sport. We are very much looking forward to officially inaugurating the field with a grand opening ceremony and giving the people of Düsseldorf an unforgettable day."
In addition to the New England Patriots flag football field, a second flag football field will also be opened at the Garath district sports facility as part of the Football Fest, which the city of Düsseldorf has dedicated to Sebastian Vollmer. It will therefore be a special day for the two-time Super Bowl champion, who was born not far from Düsseldorf: "Everything started for me here in my hometown of Düsseldorf. I'm very proud that I can play my part with the Patriots in helping to ensure that the next NFL career might start in Düsseldorf. The Football Fest for the opening of the fields will be a great event for the whole family, which I'm really looking forward to."
All Düsseldorf residents are cordially invited to attend this special day, celebrate with the Patriots and experience the sport up close. Free admission.
Flag football is the non-contact version of American football and one of the fastest growing sports in the world, with women and girls showing the most growth and participation. Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The football teams Düsseldorf Panther and Rhein Fire, based in the state capital, have recently launched their own ambitious flag football program, the Düsseldorf Firecats. The Firecats will have an ideal sporting home at the district sports facility in Garath and will benefit from the joint commitment with the city and the New England Patriots. In addition, the field named after Sebastian Vollmer and the field of the New England Patriots will strengthen Düsseldorf as a flag football location in the long term.
