Nijole Schaffmeister: talk to me

Schaffmeister develops her own unmistakable visual language in her paintings. Constantly recurring, simple forms and a deliberately reduced yet powerful color palette meet reflective surfaces that literally draw the viewer into the picture. The chosen color contrasts - often in black, white and magenta - create an exciting interplay that lends the works a lively, sometimes playful composition. The result is a painterly dynamic that is both thoughtfully structured and sensually tangible. Superimpositions of different color surfaces partly obscure the view, partly open up the interior of the picture - and thus create a multi-layered, visual depth.

Reflection is a central moment in Schaffmeister's work. The reflective surfaces of her paintings in particular open up a space of encounter in which the viewer and the painting perceive each other. This visual feedback creates a situation of shared presence: the painting is no longer merely an object of contemplation, but an active resonance space that invites participation and deliberately blurs the boundaries between subject and object.

Nijole Schaffmeister studied art and social sciences at the University of Siegen from 2017 to 2023 and was awarded the art prize for the subject of art there in 2022. She is currently studying under Michael Sistig at the Kunstakademie Münster. She lives and works in Münster.
