Heike Patzschke reads from her translation of The Gift of a Rainy Day by Makoto Shinkai & Naruki Nagakawa

MAKOTO SHINKAI (*1973) is one of Japan's best-known filmmakers. His film Your Name became the world's most successful anime of all time in 2016 and is also very popular in Germany.
His literary debut The Gift of a Rainy Day(Kanojo to kanjo no neko), which SHINKAI co-wrote with fellow anime writer and screenwriter NARUKI NAGAKAWA in 1999, became an overnight bestseller. It is based on his award-winning short film Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko (She and Her Hangover, 1999).
In four melancholy stories,The Gift of a Rainy Day describes protagonists with problems that are typical of our times. With the help of their four-legged companions - several cats and a dog - they find solace, companionship and new courage to face life. The stories are told alternately from the human and animal perspective, which gives everything an additional appeal.
