Eight dancers, 500 fan scarves, Ultras and Swifties, politics and protest: The new piece by Munich choreographer Moritz Ostruschnjak is a virtuoso ride through fanism and protest culture.
Soccer takes center stage: fan scarves from stadiums all over the world become stage sets, costumes and elements of the play. Time and again, the ensemble ignites collective energy and shows the passion of the people. Beauty and violence, power and masses meet in a maelstrom of meanings.
As always, Ostruschnjak and his team allow elements from different worlds to collide: Mass choreographies of the stadiums are transformed into complex and highly energetic movement sequences by the dancers. The videos by artist Moritz Stumm combine images from soccer arenas, concerts, rallies and protests. The performance is driven by music ranging from pop to stadium singing to classical music.
In this way, NON + ULTRAS draws very sensual connections between the aesthetics of fanaticism and political upheaval. In this way, the performance becomes a striking commentary on our society, which happily submits to the power of images and in which it is becoming increasingly attractive to merge into the collective.
