The second film in the 3rd season of "Antiquity in Film" is O Brother, Where Art Thou? Even though the southern states of the USA in 1937 form the historical background of the plot in this work by the Coen brothers, the German subtitle 'Eine Mississippi-Odyssee' (A Mississippi Odyssey) suggests that there is more antiquity behind it than it might initially appear. The trickster Ulysses Everett McGill, played by George Clooney, is the hero of a congenial transposition of Homer's odyssey into the Mississippi landscape, which masterfully manages the balancing act between ancient model and modern setting, not least thanks to a great blues and bluegrass soundtrack - because American cultural history is not neglected here either.

A lecture by Prof. Dr. Kai Trampedach (Department of Ancient History, Heidelberg) will provide an introduction to the parallels, allusions and ancient models.
