The Odenwald Shanty Choir on a cruise ship? Hard to imagine! But what can you do when Prof. Dr. Alfons Netwohr invites you on board the "La Traviata", where he has the opportunity to present the findings of his "Institute for Speculative Local History" on the maritime traditions of the Odenwald to the inclined passengers.
But when the Odenwald Shanty Choir leaves its familiar, completely dry surroundings, this naturally leads to diaphragm-straining complications. Especially as the ship, as the cult troupe soon discovers, is not exactly in the luxury segment of the cruise scene.
After a forced hiatus of several years and a permanently sold-out return with the belated anniversary program "Alte Freunde kann man sich nicht aussuchen", the singers and their eloquent lyricist and narrator Manfred Maser finally bring a brand new program to the stage.
"Here today, gone tomorrow" turns the audience into fellow travelers in a rousing way. With classic shanties, with amazing interpretations of well-known pop and rock songs and, as always, with their own songs - sometimes in German and sometimes in Ourewellian.
And of course Maser and his alter ego Netwohr don't miss the opportunity to raise questions - about traveling, cruising, and about a world in which you no longer go somewhere to be there, but to have been there.
Anyone expecting "only" folkloristic choral singing from the Odenwald Shanty Choir will not be disappointed, but pleasantly surprised. 20 singers, instrumentalists and actors, a colorful stage set and even more colorful costumes, cabaret lyrics and adventurously funny stories. With this unique mixture, the OSC has been active on the stages of the world for over 30 years - well, on the stages of the world between the Neckar, Main and Rhine rivers. The Odenwald Shanty Choir - probably the largest cabaret group in the world.
