Ohrknacker: Georg Friedrich Haas / Trio Catch

At Trio Catch's ear-cracking concerts, ears are opened and new sounds are heard. The focus is always on one piece, which is played twice and examined in more detail in between in an exchange with the audience. Everything can, nothing must: no age restrictions, no fear of contact, no need for previous musical knowledge. The event lasts a good hour, and the bar in the concert hall is open before and after the concert.

For the special edition of Ohrknacker as part of the Hamburg blurred edges festival 2025, Trio Catch will be performing the piece "Catch as Catch can" by Georg Friedrich Haas, which the Austrian composer wrote especially for the trio on commission from the Kölner Philharmonie.

Experimenting with new sounds and forms of expression forms the core of Georg Friedrich Haas' work. For him, microtonality is not a deviation from the norm, but a natural part of the musical spectrum. Haas feels his way into new territory, even though his music is rooted in tradition. Its filigree appearance and sensitivity to the most delicate vibrations are emphatically reminiscent of existential concerns. The very beginning of his clarinet trio, with its intervals of sixths, quarter tones and chromatic clusters, transports the listener into microtonal spaces in which the instruments of Trio Catch move with complete naturalness. The great rhythmic complexity and the extended glissandi are also tart and grueling. In addition, special playing techniques such as circular breathing for the clarinet and sound alienations such as muffling the strings in the piano round off the exciting sound adventure.
