In the small Breton town of Paimpont, all is still well with the world: the primary school teacher knows everything better, the supermarket owner has a serious alcohol problem, the Alsatian plumber is more Breton than the locals and the village policeman could hardly be more simple-minded and unmusical. So it's not a good idea that a new family should bring a breath of fresh air into the village community. Especially as the new arrivals are not from Ukraine as expected, but from Syria and are also intelligent. They also know how to make really tasty galette dough.
With THE BARBARS - WELCOME TO THE BRETAGNE, director and leading actress Julie Delpy creates a wonderfully revealing comedy about human shortcomings and prejudices. She skillfully balances thematic seriousness and humorous exaggeration of the endearingly quirky characters. Political incorrectness meets exaggerated welcome culture and everyone has to ask themselves the question: Are we the true barbarians?
