To celebrate their fortieth wedding anniversary, Gerda and Kristoffer are given the gift of a trip to Rome, where Gerda studied art before her wedding. The ease of the trip is interrupted when a shadow from the past appears: Gerda's former teacher and lover Johannes. Enchanted and invigorated by his charming manner, Gerda remembers her childhood dream of becoming an artist and her secrets from that time. Kristoffer soon suspects that there is more than just a friendly relationship between Gerda and Johannes. He is confused and his doubts drive him into absolutely absurd situations.
