Orpheus in the Underworld

Opéra-bouffon by Jacques Offenbach, text by Hector Crémieux and Ludovic Halévy

One of the great mythical travesties between heaven and hell: Jacques Offenbach used the myth of the musician Orpheus, who wants to free his beloved Eurydice from the underworld, for his tale of dangerous love temptations and tangible marital problems - played out under the watchful eye of "public opinion" and with the participation of the divine staff. The goddesses from heaven and hell will use any means to get close to Eurydice. She unswervingly pursues her own passions and Public Opinion's plan to reunite her with her husband is thwarted.

Jacques Offenbach created a lusty satire on the decadent, oversaturated society of his time, which is only briefly shaken out of its lethargy by the famous gallop from hell "Can Can". Director Michiel Dijkema, who brought Rossini's "Il viaggio a Reims" to the Großes Haus last season "as an extremely enjoyable buffo opera evening" (Aachener Zeitung), returns to Theater Aachen with Offenbach's comic masterpiece.
