The way the former colonising powers deal with the memory of the colonised countries reinforces the idea that leaving those countries was never a spontaneous and conscious decision to do the right thing. The purposeful noise and denial of facing up to history and sharing the truth continues to be a way of demonstrating power. In Our Land, Our Freedom, Meena Nanji and Zippy Kimundi trace their own personal histories and in doing so meet Mau Mau veterans, families of dispossessed individuals, inspiring activists, and uncovered atrocities of British colonial rule in Kenya. Their guiding motto: ‘Let the truth be told without fear. (NS)
