Growing up in poor circumstances in southern Chile, the son of a village school teacher and a train driver, Pablo Neruda began writing poetry from an early age and grew up to become the most important Chilean poet, one of the greatest writers in Latin America and the most exceptional figure in contemporary 20th century poetry.
In word and deed he stood, in his own words, on the side of the people "without shoes and school" and at the same time wrote in his extensive oeuvre, wonderful poems about nature, history and culture not only of Latin America and beautiful love poems that are still a pleasure to read today.
The lecture by Wolfgang Teuber, member of the board of ethecon, Ethics & Economics Foundation, is intended to give an impression and overview of the man and communist Pablo Neruda and his enormous poetic oeuvre, which is one of the great treasures of world literature.
