Painting Movies: Die Ruhelosen

The Restless (2021) by Joachim Lafosse tells the moving story of Damien, a successful painter who suffers from bipolar disorder. His wife Leïla takes care of both the family and Damien's mental health. The family lives in an idyllic coastal landscape that inspires Damien's art. But over time, the perfect façade is overshadowed by unrest. Damien's manic episodes and phases of deep depression put a strain on the relationship. Leïla is faced with the question of how much more she can sacrifice without losing herself. The film impressively shows the tension between Damien's creative genius and the devastating effects of his illness on his environment. In this drama, Lafosse combines artistic aesthetics with the harsh reality of illness and shows how the boundaries between art and madness become blurred.

The film series Painting Movies, a cooperation between jungekunstfreunde, job&kunstfreunde and the film art cinema Filmpalette, deals with the tension between art/painting/photography in film. For each film, we invite an expert who will give us a brief introduction before the screening and then be available for a discussion about what has been seen.
