Painting Movies: Munch

As part of our Painting Movies series, we invite you on a very special cinematic journey into the world of the legendary artist Edvard Munch. The biopic Munch offers a fascinating, multi-layered portrait of the expressionist, oscillating between historical moments and modern visions.

Director Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken provides a unique look at the life of this outstanding artist, who became world-famous with works such as "The Scream".

In four chronologically narrated episodes, we experience Munch's life as a dramatic tour through success and failure, ecstasy and excess - from his beginnings in late 19th century Berlin to his later life in occupied Norway. Critics have described the film as a "brilliant portrait of the century" and an "exciting kaleidoscopic character study" that combines art and film in a special way.

Following the screening, we look forward to a discussion with Philipp Lines Lange, art historian and project manager at VAN HAM Art Estate. With his many years of experience in museum and exhibition practice, he will provide exciting insights into Munch's work and its significance for art history.

The film series Painting Movies, a cooperation between jungekunstfreunde, job&kunstfreunde and the art cinema Filmpalette, deals with the tension between art/painting/photography in film. We invite an expert to each film, who will give us a brief introduction before the screening and then be available for a discussion about what has been seen.
