The Palatca Band originates from the multiethnic village of Palatca (Hungarian: Magyarpalatka), which is home to Romanians, Hungarians, and Roma. It is located in the central plains of Transylvania (Romania). In this region, the musical influences of the Renaissance and Baroque have survived, which is the foundation of its dance and music traditions.
The musicians in Palatca are Roma and have provided the village and the surrounding areas with music for weddings and festive occasions for generations. They are renowned for their high-level musicianship. Most of them belong to the Codoba and Radac families. The music played in Palatca remains authentic to the village, much like the music in nearby regions that Béla Bartók likely encountered during his music explorations in the early 20th century. This “Buena Vista” of Transylvania still represents a musical culture that is at risk of disappearing in the age of globalization.
