Round birthdays should be celebrated, right? The 500th birthday of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and the 90th birthday of Arvo Pärt provide a welcome occasion this year. As a grand master of the Renaissance, the Roman chapel master influenced Bach, Handel and Beethoven with his refined vocal works of polyphonic church music. The Estonian composer, on the other hand, inspired by the choral tradition of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, is one of the most important contemporary composers. Two masters of sacred music, separated by more than four centuries, but whose works are quite similar in their emotion and spiritual power in their overwhelming effect. And so the five movements of Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli, published in 1567, are interwoven with works by Arvo Pärt. The RIAS Kammerchor Berlin, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2023, is one of the world's leading professional choirs. Under the direction of Latvian conductor Kaspars Putniņš, it creates magical worlds of sound full of profound beauty with transparency, virtuosity and vocal perfection as a tribute to the two jubilarians!
