Anyone who wants to understand the social situation of African states should not miss this discussion. Adom Getachev, renowned scholar at the University of Chicago, is one of the most influential voices in contemporary postcolonial discourse. Her work The World after Empires. The Rise and Fall of Postcolonial Self-Determination (2022), which takes a new look at anti-colonial struggles of the 20th century, was enthusiastically received at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Now she is coming to Hamburg for the first time and will be available for a lecture and discussion on "Pan-African Worldmaking" at MARKK. In the talk, Adom Getachew will discuss the connection between the term "Worldmaking", which she coined, and her exhibition Project a Black Planet, as well as what is missing in European debates about looted art and reparations.
Biography
Adom Getachew is Professor of Political Science andRace, Diaspora and Indigeneity at the University of Chicago. She is the author of "The World After Empires.
The Rise and Fall of Postcolonial Self-Determination"
(2022) and co-editor, with Jennifer Pitts, of "W. E. B. Du Bois: International Thought" (2022). As part of a four-person curatorial team, she curated the exhibition "Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica" and co-edited the accompanying catalog. She is currently working on a second book on the intellectual origins and political practices of Garveyism. Her writing has appeared in Dissent, Foreign Affairs, the London Review of Books, The Nation, the New York Review of Books and the New York Times.
