PANOPTICON • Vasiliki Papapostolou aka Tarantism

In the organizer's words:

This piece shows a struggle for freedom, for the liberation of a human soul from a machine-like body. The dancer Vasiliki Papapostolou translates this longing in an impressive way into a body language that shows man and machine in conflict with each other. She is a newcomer, an expressive dancer between contemporary dance and urban dance.

The piece begins with the ticking of a metronome - this sound, slow at first, becomes faster and drives the figure on stage. Papapostolou portrays a robotic being, a person who has long since internalized the rhythm, almost becoming a machine herself. And yet: the human in her emerges. She fights for a way out, for freedom.

PANOPTICON is a metaphor for a modern society in which people's lives are determined by machines and in which they are constantly observed. Today, the combination of technology and visibility is more reminiscent of the effects of social media.

A dense, fascinating and humanistic play. "A brilliantly grotesque solo" was just one of the laudatory verdicts in the British press after the premiere in London.
