"Die Totenwache" is the seventh production by Christine Vogt and her theater ensemble PAPILLONS, founded in 2016, in the nursing home "Am Kreuzberg". The ensemble brings together mainly residents suffering from dementia and professional artists - together they have an impressive 887 years of life.
New production with premiere on July 3, 2025
With the musical theater project Totenwache, artistic director Christine Vogt addresses rituals at the end of life. Based on the realization that formerly familiar rituals surrounding death are increasingly disappearing in this country, the production is also dedicated to traditions from other cultures. Forgotten and concealed aspects come to light. Death itself becomes a player - and the question arises: who is actually watching over whom?
A summer evening invites you to unusual encounters...
This production marks the end of a trilogy: in Passengers (2023), the focus was on older people's favorite objects, which opened up large narrative spaces. Anprobe (2024) dealt with the last dress and the idea of the afterlife. In Totenwache, the PAPILLONS explore what contemporary collective mourning work can look like - creative and life-affirming rituals emerge.
Once again, children and the elderly actors form tandem teams that repeatedly overcome the hurdles of forgetting.
