International star director Kornél Mundruczó presents a visually stunning theater production about identity in times of anti-Semitism, racism and queer hostility - awarded the Nestroy Prize 2024 for Best Director.
Three generations of a family in a cramped apartment in Budapest: the grandmother, who refuses to accept a medal of honor as a Holocaust survivor; the daughter, who needs proof of her Jewish identity to secure a school place for her son in his new home in Berlin; the adult son, who is searching for his own identity as a homosexual man. They all ask the same questions: can we free ourselves from inherited identity attributions? When is identity a privilege, when does it become a burden? It all depends on your point of view. With "Parallax" (the term refers to the apparent change in the position of an object when viewed from different angles), Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó and his independent theater group Proton Theatre create an epic family story and draw a deeply moving moral picture between Eastern European Jewry and the LGBTQ+ community, which suffers from countless restrictions in Hungary.
