Passionskonzert "Der Tod Jesu" | Gellert Ensemble

In the organizer's words:

Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach (1732-1795): The Death of Jesus (first version 1769) /
Performance as part of the concert series "Passion Music after 1750" and Part II of the Ramler Trilogy

Performers:
Dorothea Wagner (soprano)
Inga Jäger (alto)
Robert Pohlers (tenor)
Diogo Mendes (bass)
GELLERT ENSEMBLE (Choir & Orchestra)
Andreas Mitschke (conductor)

As a continuation of the trilogy and as the centerpiece of the series, the GELLERT ENSEMBLE performs the first setting of the Death of Jesus (BR-JCFB D 2a) by Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach from 1769. The composer, who was Kapelldirektor in Bückeburg at the time and often referred to as the "Bückeburg Bach", refers in his setting to the chorale movements of his father Johann Sebastian Bach. This composition in particular is an outstanding example of the transition from the stricter Baroque music influenced by his father to an independent style and his noticeable emancipation with this work.

The work illustrates how Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach built on the musical foundations of his time and expanded them through the influence of the Italian style. At the same time, the individual design of the arias marks a clear step towards his own musical language. The performance by the GELLERT ENSEMBLE can be seen not only as a cultural event, but also as a contribution to music-historical research and to the rediscovery and appreciation of the works of the Bach family, which go far beyond Johann Sebastian Bach. It is an opportunity to familiarize the audience with the diversity and depth of the Bach family's musical heritage and to offer an insight into the musical development of the 18th century.

Tickets for the event are available via Reservix and at the Box Office.
