In the organizer's words:
The Personal and the Political
May 16, 2025 - Sep 07, 2025
Paula Rego's (1935-2022) paintings possess an explosive power that few artists can match. In her adopted country of England, Rego is one of the greats of figurative painting, such as Lucian Freud or David Hockney. In her home country of Portugal, she has changed the political reality with her unsparing art. Based on around 120 works, the exhibition traces Rego's artistic development since her studies at the Slade School in London in the 1950s. The focus is on the series of works in which the most intimate personal experiences are transformed into images of collective experience during the artistic process. They touch on sensitive themes such as political and sexualized violence and contrast these with self-determination, community and affection. The medium of choice early on is paper. The selection of works is complemented by selected paintings and examples of the dolls that Rego produced for her compositions in the 2000s. The exhibition is the artist's second retrospective in a German museum.
