PEACE MUSIC FESTIVAL (THROUGH OVERWHELMING STRENGTH)
by and with Hong-Do Lee
from the Korean by Kotti Yun
In spring 2025, the young Seoul playwright Hong-Do Lee was a guest at the Residenztheater as part of a WELT/BÜHNE writing residency. He became known as an author of black comedies that take a critical look at Korean society and the art scene using satire and parody. In his plays, he plays with literary models and writes with echoes of surrealist theater. This is also the case in his new play "Peace Music Festival (Trough Overwhelming Strength)", in which he paints an almost prophetic portrait of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who has since been removed from office, and addresses the tensions with his direct neighbor North Korea. After its premiere in November 2024, it received a great deal of attention and is now being presented at the WELT/BÜHNE Festival for the first time outside South Korea.
In-house director Alexander Eisenach will set up the staged reading. In the subsequent discussion, Lee will talk about his writing, the theater landscape and the current political situation in South Korea.
