January 1945: Frieda has to flee Silesia overnight with her daughter, wearing only the bare necessities and in freezing temperatures of minus thirty degrees. Her husband Karl is at the front. Frieda and he have promised to find each other again and to keep faith in their love - without realizing the price Frieda will pay.

Decades later, her granddaughter wonders why she is unable to form the bonds she longs for. Where does this fear of closeness come from? When she goes in search of clues in her family, she discovers a dramatic story that still has an impact today.

Peggy Patzschke was the radio voice of Central Germany for over a decade. Today she works as an editor and presenter in front of and behind the camera for ARD, MDR and 3sat and has a podcast. She lives in Leipzig. "Bis ans Meer" is her first novel.
