Ages 10 and up

Against her will, fifth-grader Pembo has to move with her parents Mustafa and Mona from the beautiful Turkish Mediterranean coast to gray Hamburg. Her father has inherited a hairdressing salon there. A long-awaited dream. Pembo herself doesn't want to be in Germany. She loves the sun and sea of her home country. In Hamburg, everything is strange and she doesn't know anyone. She feels torn between two worlds. Little by little, Pembo succeeds in approaching the new - and turning half and half into a well-rounded, happy life. "Pembo" is a moving and humorous story about a girl who comes to Germany from Turkey with her family.

Ayşe Bosse, who grew up in a German-Turkish family herself, has created a wonderful main character far removed from any clichés. Everything fits together perfectly in this story, it is captivating, humorous, sensitive, authentic and also a little bit magical. For this, it was awarded the KIMI seal for diversity in children's and young adult books.
