Penthesilea. ein Requiem

The meeting of two worlds

War is raging in Troy. The city has been besieged by the Greek army for years. The Amazons are called upon to help, with Queen Penthesilea at their head. She is to put an end to the destructive war and bring about victory for the Trojan side. The Greeks have the hero Achilles at their disposal, who is considered invincible. An epic duel is expected, with both sides confident of victory. What the warring parties do not know: The queen and the hero are tired of killing. The two antagonists come face to face in the nightly duel in Penthesilea's tent. A reluctant attraction arises from games and exchanges of blows, and (illicit) love strikes like an unexpected projectile on the ground of hatred and war.

Nino Haratischwili's rewriting combines ancient pathos with modern character psychology and focuses on the meeting of two worlds that rely on their differences. Against this backdrop, she brings the images of the turmoil of war, gender relations, patriarchy and the responsibility of an individual towards the state into sharp focus. A text full of depth and cruelty, in which the tender desire for hope lies dormant.
