Hirayama cleans public toilets in Tokyo. He seems completely content with his simple, secluded life. Away from his structured everyday life, he devotes himself to his passion for music, which he listens to on cassette tapes, literature, which he reads every evening in second-hand paperbacks, and his plants. Through a series of unexpected encounters, a past that he has long since left behind gradually comes to light.

Wim Wenders' film is a delightful observation of everyday life that quickly became a great audience favorite. In almost documentary-like footage, we accompany a protagonist who is almost never rattled and seems to be fundamentally positive - which rubs off and often makes us smile. Without any kitsch, the result is a touching, almost poetic reflection on the beauty of the everyday world.
