Lecture and discussion with Christine Lötscher
Moderation: Barbara Plankensteiner
Not all children's book heroines are like Pippi: she makes the world the way she likes it. Pippi Lamgstrumpf has become an icon of feminism and punk. However, many children's books and films confront girls with a multitude of clichéd and standardized role models. These "heroes" are thin, wealthy, "bitchy" and their stories are often under-complex. Girls thus learn that the more interesting stories take place with the boys.
Has it always been like this?
Where is it different?
Are we experiencing a backlash in children's media - back from punk to princess and the pea?
And what does Taylor Swift have to do with it?
Christine Lötscher is a pop culture scholar at the University of Zurich and her work focuses on Taylor Swift fan research and children's media.
On January 9, Christine Lötscher will talk about Pippi as a projection screen - in the picture you can see Greta Thunberg as Pippi - and the impact of other pop cultural figures on the occasion of the exhibition "Pippi's Dad and a Really True Story from the Pacific".
