High-tech retro-futurism with soul
Ed Handley and Andy Turne aka Plaid have been an institution and cornerstone for anyone seriously interested in electronic music since the late 80s. The duo, which emerged from The Black Dog, must be mentioned in the same breath as the golden warp generation around LFO, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Autechre. Their penchant for genuine melodies and classic song structures makes the two Brits something very special in the renowned Warp guard.
This is what advocates of technology sound like: modern, but also warm and nostalgic - a kind of high-tech retro-futurism, playful and wondrous. From their early releases to the present day, they have developed new synthesis methods and explored different musical styles, following a thread that runs through the early hip-hop of their youth and far beyond - all the way to the sounds of the 60s and 70s.
Plaid tour extensively, traveling the world and often playing more than 50 shows in a year. They have written for and performed with sound explorers, percussion groups, solo artists and orchestras - for example the BBC Concert Orchestra. They have written music for computer games and scored several feature films, one of which, "Tekkon Kinkreet", won the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.
Plaid are outstanding live, because for all their adventurousness and playfulness, they always manage to achieve what is most important: Closeness, peppered with oodles of the greatest moments and sounds - never harsh or cold, but atmospheric and full of soul.
