In his lecture, journalist and non-fiction author Thomas Urban not only outlines the events at the end of the war in Upper Silesia, but also looks at the prehistory of the flight and expulsion from Upper Silesia, namely the German-Polish conflicts over the region's state affiliation. His lecture is rounded off by a summary and assessment of today's Polish debates on these tragic chapters of our shared history.
Thomas Urban was a correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung for 32 years, working in Warsaw, Moscow, Kiev and Madrid. Today he analyzes developments in the former Soviet bloc for Cicero magazine. He is the author of non-fiction books on the history of the German-Polish conflict and on Russian writers in exile. His book on the murder of officers at Katyn is considered a standard work and has been translated into seven languages.
A joint event by the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Haus Foundation and the Upper Silesian State Museum Ratingen-Hösel
