Polymer DMT / Fang Yun Lo: KIM

In the organizer's words:

Kim is a stage work between dance, literature and film and is based on the novel Wherever You Are by the award-winning German-Vietnamese journalist and author Khuê Phạm, who will also be performing on stage.

The novel Wherever You Are by Khuê Phạm follows the effects of the Vietnam War (or the "American War", as it is called in Vietnam) and the associated dispersion of the family to several continents. On this basis, the book explores the loss between cultures, the speechlessness about the past and the relativity of concepts such as good and evil.

Together with Khuê Phạm and five dancers and performers, all of whom have intercultural experience themselves, we follow these traces with Kim and link them to our own - and the audience's - experiences.

The experience of otherness and the conflict with one's parents' generation is not an exclusively post-migrant experience. In these special stories, however, many things condense in a very small space - they tell of people, love, home and war.

Post-show talk

Invisible because of it: Insights into the Vietnamese-German community
Around 200,000 Vietnamese live in Germany, they are considered hard-working and polite, their food is popular. How do they themselves view these clichés - and how do they view German society? Based on the stage play Kim, which is based on the family story of ZEIT journalist Khuê Phạm, the panelists talk about their lives with German and Asian culture. What tensions are there between the older and younger generations? How do the experiences of Vietnamese women who grew up in West Germany differ from those from East Germany? In what ways have personal experiences been incorporated into the stage play Kim, and what reactions have there been so far?

With: Khuê Phạm (actress and author of the play), Fang Yun Lo (director of KIM), Thoại Phạm (father of the author and role model for a main character), Lan Mi Le (actress and film student). Moderation: Minh Thu Tran (journalist and co-host of the Vietnamese-German podcast "Rice and Shine")
