Populismus, Desinformation und Manipulation – Wie retten wir valides Wissen im Netz?

In the organizer's words:

The Pope in a hip white down coat, worm medication as a cure for Covid or Volodymyr Selensky as a supposed dictator: we live in a time in which we encounter disinformation, manipulation and populist statements online and it is becoming increasingly difficult to recognize them.

The effects are now clearly visible: according to a recent Forsa study, concern about targeted disinformation online has rarely been so great. Nine out of ten respondents fear a split in society, and a similar number fear the radicalization of individuals through political disinformation.

One ray of hope is the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, which has stood for free access to reliable and source-checked knowledge for almost 25 years. A global community of volunteers shows how a critical approach to information can be achieved with clear rules and roles. But is this enough to save valid knowledge on the internet? To kick things off, we will shed light on exactly how disinformation and manipulation work online and what options we have to better recognize them. We will then discuss with experts the question of how society can be strengthened in dealing with disinformation and populism - and what role free knowledge projects such as Wikipedia play in this.
