The Library in the Ice is an art project by artist Lutz Fritsch, which was inaugurated on January 19, 2005 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Alfred Wegener Institute. The building on the ice is intended to be a place of retreat, a space for contemplation, a quiet place to think about being in the Antarctic, about nature and civilization and about how we deal with space and the environment. However, the artwork is not just a container on the ice, but a real, usable library with 1000 books donated by artists and scientists from all disciplines. Each donor wrote their name and a short comment at the front of the book.
This very special art project will be celebrated by the Alfred Wegener Institute in cooperation with the City Library on Friday, January 24, with a multimedia presentation of the "Library in the Ice" and a live link to the Antarctic.
