When spring comes, Snegurochka must melt. And that means death for Rimsky-Korsakov's title character, who is made entirely of snow. The libretto is based on a fairy tale that is also a social study about love, calculation and power. Russian director Maxim Didenko's reading shows a landscape above the climatic tipping point, a hostile icy desert and at the same time a frozen society that has forgotten how to listen to each other. The snow girl's parents take different scientific positions: will technology save the world? Or will it be the spring everyone longs for? Leo McFall pulls out all the orchestral stops for Rimsky-Korsakov's music full of beguiling melodies and catchy dances.
