Program:
Dmitri Shostakovich: Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major op. 102
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 4 in G major
By founding Utopia in 2022, Teodor Currentzis fulfilled his dream of an orchestra whose members would come together from various international ensembles to form a creative collective on a project-by-project basis. The Greek-Russian conductor then specifically selects works for this orchestra, which he then performs with reverence but without fear! After carefully studying the scores, he then implements his own sound ideas with this temporary orchestra. Of course, Currentzis is (not only) polarizing, but if you get involved with his interpretations, the music inevitably becomes an event. Whether exploding, whipped-up waves of sound or pale, barely audible pianissimi, Currentzis surprises us with unexpected accents that we have never heard before. While the second piano concerto commemorates the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich's death, Currentzis, who has already established himself as one of the great Mahler conductors of our time with Utopia, now devotes himself to Mahler's fourth symphony. It goes without saying that Aphrodite Patoulidou and Alexander Melnikov share the artistic idea of Utopia, doesn't it?
