Who were our fathers? Where are we at home? Where is our home? Albrecht von Wernow grew up with his parents telling him that he was not at home in the small town in West Germany to which his parents fled after the Second World War. His home was his father's manor east of the Oder. The search for a sense of his, his son's, homeland turns into a search for the life of his parents, his father.
Albrecht von Wernow researches his father's life and writes down what he has found. His account describes the last veils that remain over his father's life during the war. The novel also paints an empathetic picture of the happiness and suffering of war veterans and war refugees and of the barriers that stood in the way of a middle-class life after the end of the war.
