In Hollywood, the place of dreams, only one thing counts for Edward Lewis (Richard Gere): big business. A business trip has taken the rich businessman to L.A., where he wants to buy up James Morse's (Ralph Bellamy) ailing company and sell it again at a profit - a transaction that his lawyer Phillip Stuckey (Jason Alexander) has been planning for a long time. Bored, he drives through the city in his lawyer's sports car and meets the prostitute Vivian (Julia Roberts), who helps him get to his hotel. As Lewis is newly separated, he spends the night with Vivian. He even likes the prostitute so much that he asks her to accompany him for a week. While Vivian, fascinated, enters a world that was previously denied to her, Lewis develops feelings for her. A tender love story ensues.
