The film tells the story of a literature lecturer in post-revolutionary Tehran who founds a book club with seven of her female students. They read Western classics that are banned in Iran.
The Israeli-Italian co-production is based on the memoirs of the same name by Azar Nafisi, an Iranian-American university professor and writer who is committed to women's and human rights in Muslim cultures. The film is based on her autobiographical novel "Reading Lolita in Tehran", published in 2003.
