Lutz Ackermann has done away with his private life. It was never eventful anyway, so the freed-up energy can be invested more profitably. It remains to be seen in what, as no remarkable career is on the horizon. Karla's career, on the other hand, is being held back by a surplus of private life. It is really illusory that Rainer, her boss, with whom she has been having an affair for years, would leave his wife because of her.
Lutz and Karla meet as strangers on an ICE train, end up in the same provincial town, later in the same provincial snack bar and finally in the same provincial hotel bed. A journey to the station of marriage?
You can see 'Privatleben' as an intelligent tabloid comedy. Director Inka Neubert [...] has decided against this interpretation. Her production concentrates on telling the story of emotional exhaustion, which is perhaps a characteristic of our time and not just a problem of the two main characters.
