Public Viewing: Castor et Pollux für drei Gamben und ein Kino

At the heart of "PUBLIC VIEWING: CASTOR ET POLLUX for three viols and a cinema" is the French baroque opera "Castor et Pollux" by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). As a "tragédie lyrique", it is completely oriented towards the French language, its flow and its melody. The Berlin Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm was a great lover of French opera. He had Ludwig Christian Hesse (1716-1772) translate Rameau's fantastic French operatic work into absolutely idiomatic viola da gamba literature.

In the performance at the Theater im Delphi, the original enters into a dialog with the adaptations: the audience watches a recording of "Castor et Pollux" by Jean-Philippe Rameau together. The performance on the screen is interrupted by Ludwig Christian Hesse's historical transcriptions as live intermedia for three bass viols in the places provided for them in the opera.

In this unconventional, colorful and varied way, a piece of Berlin music history is revived and made tangible in a relaxed atmosphere. In the revival of the works of Ludwig Christian Hesse, you will hear works that are almost forgotten today, but which were the envy of the entire music world in Berlin at the time, since at that time the viola da gamba was in such high favor in no other place in the world as it was here.
